What reproduction quality can I expect if I select CD/DVD or Electronic Transfer as my delivery method?

All NARA reproductions contain the best available images of the original archival documents. Due to age, physical deterioration and equipment available at the time the original documents were imaged, some images may not be up to today’s standards of clarity. NARA makes every effort to provide customers a clear and accurate duplicate of the original microfilm master.

How long will an Electronic Transfer be available?

Files will be available for 30 days from date of upload; downloads of the files should take place within that period. Files will be deleted after that point.

What is an Eastern Cherokee application?

Eastern Cherokee applications are claims for compensation arising from the judgment of the United States Court of Claims on May 28, 1906, for the Eastern Cherokee tribe. Applicants were required to provide sworn evidences of identity including their full English and Indian names (if known), residence, date and place of birth, and names, birthplaces, and residences of their immediate family.

    What is an Eastern Cherokee?

At the time of the Treaty of New Enchota, 1836, some members of the Cherokee nation decided not to agree to the removal of the west. They fled to the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. They became known as the Eastern Band of the Cherokee.

What kind of information does the application include?

The applications required each claimant to state full English and Indian names, residence, age, place of birth, name of spouse, name of tribe, and names of children. It also required information on the claimant’s birth parents, grandparents, siblings, and extended family.

Why would an application be rejected?

An application would be rejected if the ancestor through which the applicant claimed connection to the Eastern Band did not appear on earlier rolls of that group.

    What is an Indian name?

A family or tribe gave a name based on some characteristic particular to the person. The name often came from the tribal language, however, there are Indian names that used English words to express the same characteristic.

Where do you find the Eastern Cherokee Application Number?

There is an alphabetical index online on ARC. The index is by the English last name. Next to the name is the application number. This number determines the eligibility of members of that tribe for reimbursement for land and land improvement.

Who is included in the index to the Guion Miller Eastern Cherokee enrollment?

All Eastern and Western Cherokee Indians who were alive on May 28, 1906, who believed that they could establish that they were members or descendants of members of the Eastern Cherokee Band.

What is the difference between this Eastern Cherokee enrollment and the Guion Miller enrollment?

    They are the same.

If my ancestors lived in Oklahoma, could they have applied for the Eastern Cherokee payment?

Western Cherokee Indians who were alive on May 28, 1906 and could have established that they were descendants of members of the Eastern Cherokee Band could apply.
